Celebrating Autumn Episode

Well, it’s fall, my favorite time of year! I decided to celebrate by pulling together three past episodes related to this beautiful season. We’ll revisit a stunning view of the Hudson River by Jasper Cropsey and see how Charles Sheeler turned a country stove into a modern image. Last but not least is Alma Thomas and her exuberant “Autumn Drama.”

So join me for this special expanded episode of “A Long Look!”

Hi everyone, Karen here.

Well, it’s officially fall! I’ve always loved this time of year. It feels like a time for fresh starts and gorgeous endings. So I decided to pull together three episodes that celebrate this beautiful season. I’ll provide links to each image if you want to follow along.

So join me for this extended fall episode of A Long Look!

First up is a stunning view of the Hudson River by Jasper Cropsey, gleaming with brilliant sunlight and lined with fiery trees. You can find it at alonglookpodcast.com/hudson

Next is a quiet but revolutionary photo by Charles Sheeler who turns a simple country cottage into modern art. It’s not directly about fall but the stove featured in it reminds me how great its warmth would feel on a chilly night. You can find it at alonglookpodcast.com/charles

Finally it’s the colorful, exuberant Autumn Drama by Alma Thomas. This woman is my hero, having found success late in life and she’s now the subject of a fantastic exhibition called “Alma Thomas: Everything is Beautiful.” It’s co-organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Va and the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia, Alma’s hometown. It’s now on view at the Chrysler Museum but it’ll be at the Phillips Collection here in DC from October 30 — January 23, 2022. I can’t wait!

Alma was also fascinated by NASA’s Apollo moon landings during the 60s and 70s. In honor of that, I chose music for her segment with space-y titles. They’re “Orbiting A Distant Planet” and “All About The Sun” by Quantum Jazz. I’ll include a link in the show notes.

I hope you all found ways to enjoy the summer, hopefully reuniting safely with family and friends. But now it’s time to bring on cool nights, hot drinks and cozy sweaters!

As always, thanks for joining me.
